I think the Vietnam war was so important, because it was really about World Domination. Our western way of life against the strong state and communism of Russia and China, etc. I think that is why it was so important. The world might look very different if the other way if life would have won.
Very interesting to hear this from the pov of intelligent Americans. There are some things we disagree on, not going to get into that (explosion causing) subject, but thank you both; enjoyed this throughouly!
This is a complex topic, and we try to avoid political coverage per se - as a true crime outlet, we see no benefit in getting into the weeds on political coverage - but marxism killed so many people, and there is so much disinformation surrounding this topic, that we felt it was worth covering in a small effort to prevent our social conflicts from deteriorating into further violence.
Ironically, Marxists hate "the Nordic model" because it subverts their ability to exploit tensions created by things like healthcare access. There is a similarity here to the activism of the 60s, where a large amount of the radicalism of the day was fueled by the perceived unfairness of the military draft.
I’m not going to get all political, so no worries. Just very little, since it is part of the subject. The thinking behind the way things are done here is that noone needs a billion euros/dollars. So we have no billionaires here. We have very rich people, but not filthy rich you know. Because of this we don’t have generational poverty and all citizens have opportunity to study, etc. This makes here pretty safe. For example, we’ve never had a serial killer here (though there was some dude that had gone out on a lake on midsummer different years, and for some reason he always returned alone. This happened 2 or 3 times, and then he was off to prison). Also, the max sentence here is life in prison, but that usually means 18-22 years. I think the longest someone has been in prison was 30 yrs. No idea why it’s called ”life”! For comparison, we’re about twice the size of WA and our pop. is 5.5 million (WA might be 7 million, some million more anyways).
It’s always fascinated me and many others that Americans hate socialism so much. Want to add we do have mental health problems and addiction. And because we’re a nation of introverts many here, especially old people, suffer from loneliness.
No, people can talk about what they want here (as long as they're not actively spreading disinformation), but we will always try to refrain from political advocacy. We just see it as outside of our lane.
I'm not aware of any criminological evidence that supports the idea that serial killing has any ties to economic status or education. Ted Bundy was a law student with a degree in psychology, HH Holmes was a doctor, Elizabeth Bathory was a countess!
Pathological behavior also isn't known to be mediated by social safety nets. There is evidence that wealthy people are less neurotic than the average population but it's unclear that wealth is a causative factor; neuroticism is associated with lower lifetime wealth accumulation.
There are a variety of theories on why the Nordic countries have relatively low crime, and comparing crime rates between countries can be complicated. As far as Nordic serial killers, there are several. Just a few:
Peter Lundin from Denmark, Jukka Lindholm from Finland, Roger Haglund from Norway, Willem van Eijk aka the Beast of Harkstede from the Netherlands.
Americans (in general) don't have an issue with safety nets but widely despise communism (and communists here often call themselves socialists). Social security and Medicare are both extremely popular. It's hard to pass new safety nets because we're a country of 50 different states which as you note are the size of some countries. The Eurozone has had similar issues funding a variety of projects.
I don’t think serial killings are connected to socioeconomic stuff either, it’s just a weird coincidence. Dr. Gary Brucato (the author of The New Evil) brought it up once too. This Jukka Lindholm character is a weirdo that has multiple victims who have escaped and for example started strangeling a girl in a restaurant. I actually thought he was the guy who went rowing too, but that must be someone else. Ok, I googled it and it’s another person who claimed he killed his dad. Jukka Lindholm for sure killed his mom. Maybe we’ve just been lucky in the last 100 yrs, Russia certainly has the original kind of sk’s. With a population as small as 5,5 million it might just be that. Dr. Gary Brucato was intrigued about it too, like why the lack of sk’s. As social security is being cut and benefits lowered we might find ourselves in a different reality 20 yrs from now.
I think there are probably a lot of factors we don't understand, it's likely that both genetics and parenting culture play a big role - there is a clear link between childhood trauma and psychopathy!

Very much agreed.

Same - it's okay that we disagree on things, if we all agreed on everything conversations would be very boring. We enjoyed it too!
Really here in the Nordic countries it actually is safe because of the high taxes we pay. Social democracy. So that noone falls totally off society.
Thank you for this, interesting!
