On February 14, 2018, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, a former student with a long pattern of disciplinary issues and disturbing behavior, murdered 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, and injured 17 others.

The shooting started Wednesday afternoon just before the school dismissal bell in Parkland, Florida, an affluent suburb 30 miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale and 45 miles northwest of Miami. Nikolas Cruz took an Uber to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, and arrived at 2:19 p.m., 20 minutes to dismissal.

According to police, Cruz had a rifle case and a backpack, and a staff member reported that Cruz was walking "purposefully” towards the school. The staff member did not pursue Cruz or call a "Code Red" to lock down the school; he claimed his training only called for reporting threats, though his colleague had the foresight to hide in a closet.
