Susan lived in a van with her kids & pets when they were homeless for about six months. This nomadic adventure occurred right after Susan was living with Travis’ mom.
That’s right, Willye Mae Anton gave the woman who killed her son, a place to live. This was a gesture full of grace, though Willye’s main motivation was likely her two grandchildren, Dell and Neal, whom she had barely spoken to over the last decade.
After Susan divorced her third husband, William, she needed somewhere to go. Willye Mae offered her a place on the family farm in Lexington. Susan and the kids stayed in the building behind the home, this may have been the very structure that Travis built for himself and Rae (his first wife) back in the late 1980s. There was also a shed with living quarters on the property for hired help. It’s unclear which Susan lived in, but she was essentially working for Willye Mae in exchange for a place to stay.
After a short time on the farm, Susan left, proclaiming that she wanted to homeless by choice. She took her kids, two cats and their dog with her in the winter of 2014. They were apparently inspired by the book Under the Overpass: A Journey of Faith on the Streets of America by Mike Yankoski.
The part of this story that does not line up is the reasoning behind Susan’s leaving. There are two different sides…
